Safe and Efficient Water Resource Solutions

Otak’s water resources engineering, the study and practice of managing and preserving water, ensures the planning and management of available water supply is adequately leveraged and safely used. Our sustainable, multidisciplinary approach to public and private work merges design and scientific expertise, finding unique solutions to broad challenges.

What is Water Resources Engineering?

Water resources engineering deals with the planning, design, development, and management of life’s most valuable resource. The practice focuses on design of infrastructure around these plentiful yet finite resources for various purposes. Developing models and strategies to predict water behavior within projects is ultimately aimed at evaluating and limiting environmental impacts.

Stormwater Management

Excessive stormwater can negatively impact local ecologies and waterways. Otak’s goal is to combat these negative effects to reduce flooding, to improve water quality, and to enhance infrastructure’s future resilience. Using sustainable low-impact development techniques that imitate natural water management, we improve built and natural environments. We also design facilities for the safe passage of stormwater, by planning implementing, and managing construction, and by applying stormwater strategies.

Floodplain Management

Floodplains are vital to plan for and identify. By analyzing a variety of floodplains (100-year floodplains and regulatory floodways), Otak helps vulnerable communities within special flood hazard areas (SFHAs) plan for future flooding and reduce flood insurance costs. We help communities build greater resilience to flooding, build out of floodplains, and give existing communities an accurate risk assessment relative to their floodplain proximity.

Hydraulic Engineering

Hydraulic engineering plays a critical role in the design and functionality of bridges, dams, levees, and canals. Otak’s hydraulic engineering provides uniform procedures for implementing and assuring dependable drainage design. Using fluid dynamics theory to predict how flowing water interacts with its surroundings, our hydraulic engineering stores and controls the movement of large amounts of water, diverting or removing water from roadways and pass beneath them.
