Four major private developments supported by green stormwater infrastructure in Beaverton, Oregon, began as the North Bethany Subarea Plan. Leading a multidisciplinary approach, Otak guided planning into the alternatives selection process through to documentation and final design for numerous phases of this expanding community.
A Comprehensive Concept for 800 Acres of Urban Growth with Low Impact Development
The North Bethany Subarea Plan set the stage for 800 acres of urban expansion in the City of Beaverton. Encompassing a mix of parks, open space, schools, and residential neighborhoods, expansion in the area was also supported by plans for a multimodal transit system and extensive green stormwater infrastructure. Low Impact Development (LID) applications for all street runoff and multi-family development combined with 20 regional stormwater management facilities are part of a sustainable approach to water quality and quantity for this growing community. The subsequent design of several pieces of stormwater infrastructure also included the county’s first green street, initiating this framework for development in the area based on smart growth and community involvement.
The stormwater master plan for the North Bethany area outlined the implementation of green stormwater that use native plantings to naturally treat polluted runoff. At least 20 regional facilities were included in the plan while providing guidance for their implementation alongside future additions to streets and high-density housing. Initial design work led to the first of these facilities as well as the county's first green street.
