University of Washington: Husky Village Redevelopment Bothell, Washington

Expansion of University of Washington’s Bothell Campus focused on replacing existing housing with multiple new buildings in Husky Village while redesigning roadways in the area with an emphasis on multimodal transportation. Making this work possible with civil design across several sites, Otak’s focus included temporary erosion and sediment control (TESC), grading, water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, site hardscape, frontage improvements, and construction engineering support. It would also add the design of station slabs and supporting infrastructure for a local bus rapid transit system.

Designing Multiple Sites to Grow a Cohesive Campus Experience

To accommodate more than 1,000 students, Husky Village was improved across 4.4 acres of existing property while adding several facilities. This included three new, multi-story student housing buildings for integrated office and commercial use, as well as a new on-site campus dining facility. Supporting infrastructure placed a focus on multimodal connectivity and stormwater management. Beardslee Boulevard was widened to provide an additional eastbound travel lane while adding a new 13-foot-wide multiuse trail that’s separated from the roadway for pedestrian safety by landscape features. Transportation improvements also included pavement overlay, pedestrian and traffic signal modifications, roadway and trail illumination, and utility undergrounding. Coordination with Sound Transit would also lay the groundwork for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations with shared platforms for multiple local transit lines. Extensive pipes and basins were part of a new stormwater collection, conveyance, detention, and water quality treatment system.
