Bend Whitewater Park

Location: Bend, OR
Client: Bend Metro Park and Recreation

Otak’s design for the Bend Whitewater Park project balanced recreation with river health to create the first facility of its kind on the West Coast. The Bend Whitewater Park replaces the Colorado Avenue Dam to create three channels in the river -- a channel for floaters and paddlers, a whitewater play area and a natural river area to enhance habitat. The project also includes replacing the existing bike/pedestrian bridge that connects McKay Park to Miller’s Landing Park. Otak led a multidisciplinary team to provide planning, civil engineering and bridge design, environmental and specialty services for this project.  The team’s design process brought together a diverse group of river stewards and stakeholders to create habitat solutions while also creating the West Coast’s first “adjustable standing wave” white water kayak/surfing run.
