SR 522 HOV Enhancement, Phase 2

Location: Kenmore, WA
Client: City of Kenmore

Phase 2 of the City of Kenmore’s seven-year, $25 million project to enhance business access and transit along SR 522 was recently completed. Improvements include design and construction support for a new HOV lane configuration, new sidewalks, interconnected traffic signals and a roadway median to control traffic flow. Iconic lighting, paving treatments and the use of native and indigenous plantings add visual appeal, while two new traffic signals will improve pedestrian safety. Otak designed a replacement bridge over Swamp Creek, returning the salmon-bearing stream to its natural course, and used plantings to shield the streamside habitat and nearby Burke-Gilman Trail.
