F. Maxine and Thomas W. Cook Memorial Library and Moda Regional Office

Location: La Grande, OR
Client: City of La Grande and Moda Health (formerly ODS)

Otak provided architectural, civil, survey, and landscape design services for this two-building public/private development of Moda Health and the City of La Grande. The Moda Regional office design features a two-level, 21,000 sf structure incorporating an Moda branch office on the upper level with a Moda-operated dental hygiene school at grade. The second building is a single-level, 19,000-square-foot public library for the City of La Grande. The two buildings are linked by a common plaza and large public water feature, which leads visitors through the site. The library is located at the terminus of a vital urban axis, making it a prominent civic beacon for the City. The Moda building complements the library, utilizing local stone veneers and subtle detailing to link the project to local historic structures, while a steel and glass shell rising from behind the stone expresses a vision for the future of La Grande. Library design features include a storytime enclosure in the children’s area, which uses wood panels and wood cribbing, as well as natural light that is filtered through the skylight.
