The city is beginning work on plans for a pedestrian/cyclist bridge that would span Highway 305 in Winslow.

The bridge will come as part of the next stage of the Sound to Olympics Trail on the island, and would connect Knechtel Way and John Nelson Way – about midway north and south between High School Road and Winslow Way – over Highway 305. The bridge would be for nonmotorized access only.

A $2.1 million grant from the federal government will cover the cost of construction, while the city chips in about $628,000 for the bridge’s design. Designs will take shape throughout the rest 2017 and 2018 ahead of construction in 2019, said Mark Epstein, the city’s engineering project manager.

As part of the design process, the city and Otak, Inc., its design consultant for the project, are holding the first of several public input meetings next week. The session will run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 26 at City Hall.
