Central Phoenix/East Valley Light Rail Transit
Location: Tempe, AZ One of the fastest-growing areas in the country, Phoenix and Tempe viewed light-rail transit as an effective means to reduce commute times and highway wear. Yet encouraging summer use of the 20.3-mile system proved a challenge. Otak+Architekton coordinated five different design teams in developing a proprietary cooling system that has acted as the model for all 28 stations. Using this solution, the light-rail program will feasibly connect light-rail commuters with park-and-ride facilities and rapid-transit buses.
