McCormack-Matthews Center
Location: Portland, OR The 14,000-square-foot McCormack-Matthews Center has a total of six classrooms for their Head Start program (children ages four to five), Early Head Start program (infants up to four years old), as well as an adult learning center. The facility has an indoor/outdoor room specifically used for child play. Working with landscape architects, Otak used folding doors to blur the boundaries of indoors and out and used geometry and staggered rooflines to contrast with curved elements outside. In addition, all interior spaces allow for natural daylight and ventilation, while sustainable elements such as low-VOC paints, wheatboard paneling and radiant floor heating help create an urban space rich with a sense of the greenspace outside. |
