When Nawzad Othman and two partners started their design and engineering firm with a funny-sounding name in 1981, the Northwest economy was recession.

Perhaps it wasn't the best time to start a business, Othman has said.

But Lake Oswego-based Otak thrived, managing and designing transportation, housing and office projects throughout the world, particularly in the Northwest. The company expanded and grew to a high point in 2008 with $68 million in revenue and a reputation for infusing sustainability throughout its projects.
