The site of the planned Columbia County Rider transit station on Deer Island Road in St. Helens is little more than a rough concrete expanse, featuring a little wooden house.

But by the end of the year, Columbia County hopes to start turning that desolate stretch into a landscaped park-and-ride facility and bus depot, featuring a more modern-looking building.

Architects at Lake Oswego-based Otak company are in the process of finishing their preliminary designs for the transit center, while the county plans to have a contractor hired by the beginning of July...
