Otak’s Denver office hosted an open house/tailgate party earlier this month in LoDo. Attendees toured the new office, took in the view from the deck and enjoyed the festive atmosphere before the first pitch of the Colorado Rockies baseball game at Coors Field, only a block away. It was a fun way to connect with our clients and colleagues and we thank everyone who attended!

Cascadia Community College in Bothell, Washington, held a celebration in honor of the Global Learning and the Arts Building achieving LEED Platinum! Otak served as the lead for civil engineering and also assisted with permitting/land use entitlement and provided surveying and mapping. Otak collaborated with the building’s designer, Miller/Hull Partnership, and at least a dozen professionals from all sectors of the college. LEED Platinum is the highest level of certification awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council, and this is the first LEED Platinum building for both Cascadia Community College and the City of Bothell.

The state of Oregon economic development staff invited Otak’s Don Hanson and Derek Chisholm to join a meeting with six visiting public officials from the Tianjin province of China. The event consisted of a series of presentations focused on increasing trade and general business activities between Tianjin and the Pacific Northwest, and Don delivered a presentation highlighting Otak’s talent in urban design, district planning, and architecture. The Tianjin officials asked a number of questions about our work and were keenly interested in our ability to collaborate with design teams and government departments globally, especially in China. The event was a good opportunity to share our work with a new audience and reconnect with staff from the State of Oregon and Port of Portland.

Otak recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Shaw Contract Group for recognition of environmental stewardship! As part of the tenant improvements for our new Portland office, our architects were able to return approximately 3,918 pounds of post-consumer carpet back to the manufacturer to be recycled. This decision helped eliminate almost 4,000 pounds of landfill waste!

Recycling the old carpet is only one of many sustainable elements that Otak architects incorporated into the Portland office design. Other sustainable design features include energy-efficient lighting with daylight sensors and occupancy sensors, low-emitting materials, and materials reuse. We are pursuing LEED Commercial Interiors Silver certification.

The Anderson-Laventure Road Extension project in Skagit County, WA was formally completed recently with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This project constructed over one mile of new arterial that will provide a direct route to I-5 from the rapidly developing portions of Mt. Vernon and surrounding County areas. Otak was the prime consultant for the project that consisted of new roadway with bike lanes and sidewalks as well as a bridge, two fish-passage culverts, and numerous retaining walls.

Otak recently participated in the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association’s Annual Planning Conference in Portland. Otak was an exhibitor, and our very own Derek Chisholm transported our exhibit booth from our Portland office to the conference on his electric tricycle! Don Hanson, Jennifer Mannhard, and Tom Litster joined Derek at the conference to tell other attendees about our new office and recent projects, and attend sessions, which focused on the lessons learned from the past 40 years of implementing Oregon’s statewide planning goals and the opportunities to improve upon our planning for the next 40 years. It was a good opportunity to reflect on our planning practice, engage new people, and reconnect with our valued clients and partners.

Over the last few months, Otakians in Lake Oswego have been organizing, packing, and purging unneeded items in preparation for our move to Portland. We are happy to report that our hard work has resulted in a beautiful, centrally located corporate office in downtown Portland! Our first day in the new office was May 28, and our IT team deserves special mention for working around-the-clock on Memorial Day weekend to ensure our office was ready for our arrival.

We have been in our office for about a week, and according to an internal survey, 80 percent of our Portland staff used alternate modes of transportation to commute to and from our new office. This number is up from around 15 percent at Lake Oswego! In addition to becoming more sustainable, relocating downtown allows us to establish new relationships and reconnect with our valued Portland-based clients and colleagues. Come visit us at:

808 SW Third Ave., Suite 300
Portland OR, 97204
